It's important to have your septic tank cleaned every three years. However, you may need to have it pumped more often depending on how much it is used. If you are hiring a septic tank cleaning service for the first time, here's what you can expect.
Why You Need a Septic Tank Cleaning
Sludge will accumulate at the bottom of your septic tank and will need to be cleared out. Septic tank cleaning involves not only the pumping out of the sludge but also cleans your septic tank in a more comprehensive way.
The Arrival of the Septic Truck Tank
You will want to inform the septic truck of the proper route they should follow to reach your septic tank. This can save time and can help avoid any mishaps. However, if it is not easy to access your septic tank, the company should be able to reach it with the right equipment.
You may be able to expose the tank yourself or you could hire someone to do it for you. If requested, the septic tank company can have a contractor sent to uncover the tank prior to your arrival at your home.
Sludge Removal
The septic tank must pump out the sludge so that there will be enough space for the rest of the septic tank to be cleaned out. The amount of sludge that can be removed depends on how large the opening is for the septic tank. With a small opening, you may still be able to have your septic tank pumped but it won't be as thorough.
Beware of septic tanks that have double walls. Both sides of the wall need to be pumped out so that no sludge is left behind. Some septic tank companies do not have experience clearing out this type of tank. As such, select a company that can do this work.
Tree Root Removal
If tree roots are interfering with your septic tank, you will not be able to fully clean it until you have had the tree root problem dealt with. The roots might need to be cut back or the tree may need to be removed entirely.
Filters and Drain Lines
After the sludge is cleaned out, the filter and drain lines have to be cleaned. Once all of these are cleaned, the filters might be replaced if they are worn out. Then, your septic tank will be ready to service your home for a few more years.

As you read the articles on this website, you will notice two things. First, they are all about septic services in some ways. Second, some go deep — and others are full of more surface-level facts. This is kind of like your septic system itself! The tank is buried deep, but the drain field is more superficial. You don't have to be an expert on septic systems, but as someone who owns one, you should at least know how to tell when something is wrong with yours so you can call for service. You'll get that level of understanding from this blog — and probably more!
